Fashion's climate impact does not begin at the factory. Cotton starts in a field, so the health of that field belongs in the climate conversation.

Textile Exchange calls the shift to regenerative agriculture fundamental to the long-term health of fashion and textiles. The reason is simple: soil is not just where fibre grows. It is a carbon store, a water system and a living habitat.[2][4]

The fact worth remembering

MORE CARBON.

The top 30cm of global soils contains more carbon than the atmosphere and vegetation combined.[3]

That does not turn every field into a carbon claim. It does make protecting and rebuilding soil function a serious climate priority.[3][6]

Restoring soil means rebuilding a system.

Healthy soil stores carbon, regulates water and supports the life that crops depend on. When those functions weaken, farms become more exposed to climate volatility.

Climate resilience

WHEN WEATHER BECOMES LESS PREDICTABLE, SOIL MATTERS MORE.

Soil with stronger structure and more organic matter can absorb water when it arrives and keep more of it available to plants later.[4]

This is why regenerative cotton belongs near the centre of fashion's climate conversation. Raw materials are too large a share of impact, and soil is too important a carbon and water system, to treat farming as a footnote.

A 2026 USDA cotton study found that reduced tillage and cover cropping conserved more soil moisture and delayed irrigation compared with the conventional treatment studied.
