The power of responsible print.

PANGAIA Lab is proud to introduce Algae Ink™, a bio-based alternative to conventional pigments. Created to lower environmental impact, this innovative formula redefines responsible print through the PANGAIA hangtag.

Developed by Living Ink Technologies, Algae Ink™ for PANGAIA hang tags is created by combining a soy base carrier with Algae Black™ pigment. Made using waste algae biomass, Algae Black provides a renewable alternative to traditional petroleum-derived colors. According to its Life Cycle Assessment (completed in January 2023), when compared to carbon black pigment, Algae Black can reduce carbon emissions by 200% and water usage by 98%.

Moving forward, the innovative Algae Ink will breathe new life into the PANGAIA hangtag.

This updated printing practice encapsulates how high-performance, bio-based materials can be harnessed in every design detail—because big change is born from small, consistent action. Core PANGAIA collections will now carry this symbol of pioneering technology. Each branded circle, a homage to more circular principles.

Each tag, a token of progress for the planet.

Thirty-three billion pounds of carbon black are produced each year, resulting in vast volumes of fossil fuel-derived material entering global supply chains and creating significant environmental impact. Not only is this an energy-intensive process, but it also releases considerable amounts of CO2 and other greenhouse gases—all while strengthening a widespread reliance on finite resources.

Algae Ink™ and Algae Black™ offer a bio-based alternative, with Algae Black sequestering more carbon than it emits during scaled production. As a renewable microorganism, algae requires only sunlight, CO2, and water to grow, without competing for farmland or freshwater resources. Living Ink also sources byproducts from algae cultivated for spirulina production, thus diverting excess biomass from landfill where it would otherwise emit greenhouse gases.
