Cashmere is a knitwear staple, and while it offers a premium, ultra-soft feel, its traditional production process takes a toll on natural resources.
At PANGAIA, we’re on a mission to utilize more mindful materials that benefit people and planet. That’s why we’re embracing a kinder approach to cashmere. One that reduces waste, one yarn at a time.
The Problem
The production of cashmere has a significant impact on the planet, with a single cashmere sweater requiring the coats of four goats.
As the demand for cashmere has increased globally, driven by its reputation as a premium material, so too has the size of herds and the span of farmland.
This has led to biodiversity loss and land degradation due to the goats’ grazing habits. Goats eat grass, plants and plant roots, preventing natural regeneration and leaving behind large areas of arid, fragile soils and the risk of desertification.
The Solution
By utilizing recycled cashmere, we are able to harness a more circular approach to cashmere production.
What was once discarded (think offcuts and old garments) is collected, sorted by color, and shredded into new fibers, ready to be crafted into new clothing.
We are pleased to share that the recycled cashmere in your PANGAIA pieces is GRS-certified, meaning the materials used are proven to reduce the harmful impact of production on both people and the environment.
