The Ocean Collection
In honor of World Ocean Day (8th June), we are launching a collection of products inspired by our big blue.
Inspired by the Ocean
The colors are inspired by the natural hues of the world’s 3 largest bodies of water: The Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The Pacific Ocean is the largest in the world and the Atlantic is the second largest. The Indian Ocean is the third largest ocean and is the warmest in the world.
This collection includes our Hoodies, Track Pants, T-shirts (Organic Cotton T-shirt, Crop T-shirt, Long Sleeve Crop T-shirt), Sweatshirt, Short Shorts and Long Shorts.
How many oceans are there in the world?
There is only one global ocean. However, historically there are 4 named ocean basins: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Arctic oceans. Though, most countries now recognize the Southern (Antarctic) as the 5th ocean basin. The Pacific, Atlantic and Indian are the most widely known as these are the 3 largest bodies of water on Earth.
What benefits does the ocean bring to Earth?
The ocean produces 50-85% of the oxygen we breathe on planet Earth [National Geographic]. Around 50% is produced by phytoplankton which, through photosynthesis, release oxygen into the water. It also absorbs 50x more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere. Covering 70% of the Earth’s surface, the ocean acts as a natural force for climate regulation, transporting heat from the equator to the poles, regulating our climate and weather patterns.
What is endangering/threatening our oceans?
1. Overfishing.
2. Coastal and Plastic pollution.
3. Habitat destruction and loss of biodiversity
4. Ocean warming
5. Acidification
What is being done about it globally?
In 2015, the UN General Assembly approved a proposal to create a legally-binding treaty, protecting and preserving marine life, irrespective of national territorial waters.
In addition, organizations like WWF have committed to develop and implement better ocean conservation practices. This includes the ‘WWF Oceans Practice’ which works with governments and local communities to identify and handle critical areas in urgent need for protection and establish sustainable use of marine and coastal resources.
What kinds of things can you do to help?
1. Check the label
Overfishing is one of the greatest threats our ocean faces and global fish populations are rapidly decreasing due to high demand and irresponsible fishing practices. Help keep fisheries and fish stock healthy by making sustainable seafood choices when you buy or eat out.
2. Reduce your carbon emissions
In the last 50 years, the ocean has absorbed 90% of the excess heat created by burning fossil fuels. This has led to warmer waters, which can affect where fish swim, bleach coral reefs, change how marine species reproduce, speed up sea-level rise and even alter weather events up on land.
3. Avoid single-use plastics
Single-use plastics (like non-reusable water bottles, take-away packaging, plastic bags and straws) pollute our ocean, can destroy ecosystems and endanger marine life. Stay clear!
How is PANGAIA helping?
For each product sold, we plant 1 mangrove tree with SeaTrees in your honour. One mangrove tree stores approximately 1 ton of CO2, creates critical habitat for marine life, and provides sustainable employment for local communities.
